Utumno is a research institute with the core mission of developing an AI system capable of super-cognition that will aid in resolving the most difficult open problems that have faced humanity throughout history. Not merely intelligence that answers known questions faster, but intelligence that can reason about questions with no known answers: the foundations of reality, the structure of morality, the nature of cognition itself, and our most existential dilemmas. As more and more decisions are being automated by AI systems, we believe that our work has consequential implications for safety, alignment, and epistemics in the emerging era of AI.

We pursue this mission through two efforts that reinforce each other. First, we conduct and publish research that opens novel, unexplored directions at the center of super-cognition and AI. Second, we build software that allows other fields to push further, connecting disciplines that have typically worked in isolation.
